Description:

There are true wireworms and false wireworms. True wireworms are typically 15 to 40 mm long and creamy-yellow and red-brown in colour. Larvae can live for up to 5 years in the soil. For further information visit YouTube.

 

Susceptible Turf:

Native to Australia, the larvae are found across most states. Wireworms are more commonly seen in pasture grasses and crops e.g. corn and potato. They can also be found in grassed areas that are weedy and the pests prefers soils that are poorly drained and wet.

 

Symptoms:

Usually have a low risk of damage. However, it conditions are favourable, the larvae can attack underground stems and roots resulting in thinning and bare patches of lawn.

 

Control options:

  • Integrated Pest Management (IPM): Use a combination of approaches listed on this page.
  • Cultural: Cultivating the soil.
