Kikuyu
K-5 (protected by Australian Plant Breeder's Rights); Oakridge® (is a registered trade mark of GeneGro Pty Ltd).
Oakridge® is a non-seeding male sterile variety of kikuyu grass with medium bright green leaves (3-5mm wide and 30-40mm long in mown turf). It was selected from a naturalised area growing on the Darling Downs for more than 70 years. Because of its high altitude origin (500 metres above sea level), Oakridge® shows better cold tolerance than other kikuyu strains, maintaining growth and colour well into autumn-early winter and tolerating light winter frosts. It shows moderate to good shade tolerance. Oakridge® kikuyu spreads by above ground stolons and underground rhizomes which both aid with recovery and provide improved turf density compared to older kikuyu varieties.
Oakridge® is a uniform, high quality turf variety that has been planted successfully for home lawns and on golf courses (tees), sports fields and race tracks. Positives. • Male sterile resulting in no seed heads. • No pollen to cause allergies in people or pets • No unsightly "webs" of white stamens (male flower parts) across the turf • No seeds to invade surrounding areas • No seed heads to mow to keep premium appearance. • No lawn damage from seed-harvesting parrots • More cold tolerant than other kikuyu strains • Wear resistance and rapid recovery • Uniform in appearance and performance • Soft leaves with no spiky stalks • Grown in isolation away from any other kikuyu to keep pure to type • Quick to recover from wear even in Winter due to rhizomes and stolon regeneration Negatives. • Like other kikuyu varieties, Oakridge requires frequent mowing during the warmer summer months.
