Cynodon dactylon
Green couch
The medium- to coarse-textured green couch variety has very long internodes and is extremely quick to run across the surface. Gullygold recovers quickly after scalping and produces a dark green colour with little to no fertiliser input.
Gullygold was selected by former Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) Curator Tom Parker to be used in cricket wickets. It was initially thought that the varieties fast lateral spread could aid in recovery of the natural turf wickets following (intensive) use. However, with the variety having long internodes and limited brancing, recovery required for a cricket wicket (following observations to date) has shown the grass to be undesirable. Supplementary turf management practices or installation techniques may provide a different outcome. Further work in this area with this variety is needed.
