Stenotaphrum secundatum
Buffalograss
Sir Walter (formerly protected by Australian Plant Breeder's Rights. The protection expired on 28 March 2018); Sir Walter DNA Certified is a registered trade mark of Buchanan Turf Supplies Pty Ltd (Trade Mark : 1675142).
Sir Walter DNA Certified is a coarse-textured buffalograss that is excellent in high and low-humidity areas but grows best at moderate temperatures between 20°C and 30°C. It survives normal frosts under Australian conditions and is often selected for its winter colour retention - it does not turn purple or become straw-coloured at lower temperatures. Sir Walter can withstand shading under trees and has a deep root system with less leaf water-loss compared with some other "soft-leaf" buffalograsses. Sir Walter DNA Certified is fast growing, vertical growth, and requires routine mowing to keep the variety in check.
Sir Walter is a spontaneous mutation of ‘Shademaster’ selected in the Hunter Valley (Bolwarra), NSW. Sir Walter can tolerate medium levels of wear, but the variety is not recommended for high traffic areas. Sir Walter has better wear tolerance than sweet smother, kikuyu and “Wintergreen” green couch in 50 % shade (Duff, A. et. al., 2006). Sir Walter, like many buffalo grass varieties regrows quickly by stolons, but needs a recovery time to repair damage. 'Sir Walter' is a product of Lawn Solutions Australia (LSA). Plant Breeder's Rights (PBR), IP protection, for 'Sir Walter' expired on the 28 March 2018. Following this date, anyone can sell 'Sir Walter' as the 20 year PBR protection has expired. To help protect the "brand", LSA is now promoting Sir Walter DNA Certified. DNA testing is conducted through Australian Sports Turf Consultants (ASTC). The purpose of this campaign is to help consumers to identify they are purchasing the originial Sir Walter and not an inferior product, just called Sir Walter. So if you are after the original product, look out for the Sir Walter DNA Certified logo. You can also visit their web site to identify their AusGap Certified LSA members and resellers. The marketing arm behind Sir Walter in recent years have also released fertilisers, soil conditioners, and selective herbicides that are recommended for use on Sir Walter turf. Some of these products are similar to existing products on the market, so read the content labels of the packaging for comparison before purchasing.
