Lolium spp.

Ryegrass

Other common names:

Annual, perennial and Italian ryegrass.

Description:

There are many different varieties of ryegrass, including varieties that can be either annual (Lolium rigidum), perennial (Lolium perenne) and Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum). Annual and Italian ryegrass varieties are commonly used as pasture paddocks, whereas perennial ryegrass is commonly used within sports fields and high maintenance lawns. Should ryegrass be used during the winter to provide a combination sward with green couch or hybrid green couch, the ryegrass is often transitioned or chemically removed during spring.

Susceptible Turf:

Warm-and cool-season turfgrasses.

Control options:

  • Pesticides: Selective herbicide options can be applied to target the ryegrass and preserve the desirable warm-seasons turfgrass e.g. couch. See available tabs below for registered products. Use as per label instructions.
  • Integrated Pest Management (IPM): Use a combination of approaches listed on this page.
  • Cultural: Mechanical means to reduce the density of the ryegrass sward. This includes a reduction in cutting height, scarification and drought stress.
  • Mechanical: Hand removal of persistent or turfgrass plants (few in numbers) that have shown herbicide tolerance.
